Healthy Snacks from Combos

Currently Combos offers seven different healthy junk food snack products. All of them are combinations of flavors that can appeal to anyone, from someone looking for a midday snack to satisfying the munchies at a party.

The flavors are Cheddar Cheese Pretzel, Cheddar Cheese Cracker, Nacho Cheese Pretzel, Pepperoni Pizza Cracker, Pizzeria Pretzel, Zesty Salsa Tortilla, and Jalapeno Cheddar Tortilla. Snack bags are available in different sizes, depending on the flavor combo. All of them come in single bag size and medium bag size, but the Cheddar Cheese Pretzel and the Cheddar Cheese Cracker are also offered in the large bag size.

Combos Products Nutrition Facts

Although the claim of Combos is that their products are healthy snacks, it is important to consider what these snacks are compared to in that statement. Certainly, combos may be better than other snacks, such as greasy potato chips, but it certainly isn’t a healthy snack like a piece of fruit or some celery sticks.

However, if you have to snack on some sort of junk food, then Combos may offer a better choice. The Cheddar Cheese Pretzels do not contain any trans fats, although they are made with hydrogenated oils. A one ounce serving is equivalent to about 1/3 of a cup and has 130 calories.

The same serving contains 4.5 grams of fat, 440mg of sodium, 19 grams of carbohydrates, 5 grams of sugar, and 3 grams of protein. In comparison, a 1 ounce serving of flavored tortilla chips has 150 calories, 8 grams of fat, 230mg of sodium, 17 grams of carbohydrates, 0 grams of sugar, and 2 grams of protein.

Although the fat is higher in the tortilla chips, the sodium is reduced by almost half and the sugar is non-existent. Depending on your weight loss goals and overall health, one of these snack choices may be considered healthier than the other.

If you are not interested in going for the flavors Combos offers, then one of your healthier junk food snacks may simply be the classic pretzel rods. A one ounce serving of pretzels has only 110 calories, 1 gram of negligible fat, 22 grams of carbohydrates, 1 gram of sugar, and 3 grams of protein. However, it also contains 610mg of sodium, which is almost higher than the Combos Cheddar Cheese Pretzels and flavored tortilla chips combined.

Combos products are not kosher. They also contain potential allergens such as milk, wheat, and soy products. Be sure to read the labels of the different flavors to see what ingredients are used for that particular combo.

Combos and NASCAR

NASCAR, or the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, was founded in 1947. Since 2002, NASCAR has been sponsored by Combos as “the official cheese filled snack.”

As such, it is important to note that the cheese filled snacks are not really filled with cheese. The Combos snack products are made with cheese flavors. However, the snacks are baked instead of fried, which does make that aspect healthier.

Although Combos claim to be a healthy snack company, they also focus their marketing on being a meal that’s not a meal. This is more of the approach that Combos has as the official snack sponsor of NASCAR. Very few people watch a NASCAR race without snacking, so instead of eating the usual chips, pretzels, or popcorn, you are encouraged to eat Combos.

During the 2008 and the 2009 NASCAR races, the #18 Toyota Camry Combos car came in first place. The 2009 race took place in Richmond, Virginia, and the car was driven by Kyle Busch. The Combos car is orange and sports the Combos logo along the front hood as well as on the rear panels.

Not every snack is going to be healthy, although most of them should be. Your best snacks are filled with sustaining energy and nutrition. However, for those times when junk food simply cannot be substituted with healthy foods, picking a junk food that is better than its counterparts can help you feel better about your choice.

Combos may not be the healthiest snack food and it may not be the ideal meal replacement meal, but it does give some healthy competition to some of the other junk food that is on the shelves. Use the supplement finder to locate other products that can boost your nutrition now!
