Barberry

Cleanse/Digestion / Aid Overall Health

The Barberry supplement is derived from the Barberry bush that bears fruit. This shrub thrives well in the US and is commonly used as decorative plant in gardens and yards. It is often used in hedges, partly because of the thorn that it produces; it makes a great natural barrier.

Barberry produces an alkaloid called berbamine that has many useful benefits. The great news is that berbamine is currently being used in a number of studies because preliminary studies have shown promising results for the barberry plant.

While the barberry bush does produce edible berries (called berberies), this is not a selling point for the bush. In fact, the berries are not where the most value comes from in terms of the medicinal value of the barberry bush, it’s the roots.

Not all types of physical activity are suitable for everyone. Users take training advice at their own personal risk.

Barberry Benefits and Uses

The barberry is not indigenous to America. In fact, it was brought over to the US in the late 1800s via the UK. It is a hardy plant. This means that it will grow in a variety of environments and take easily to replanting, even in sparser environments.

Barberry roots have been used for over 2,000 years to treat stomach ailments. This includes diarrhea and general stomach upset. In addition, barberry has been used to help someone who has been ill regain their appetite.

Barberry root is also an anti-inflammatory and is used to help reduce fevers. It has also been proven that barberry root helps to reduce the symptoms caused by infections such as bladder infections and respiratory tract infections. In addition, barberry may even cure these problems.

One area where barberry can ease your symptoms but not cure the problem is if you have bacterial diarrhea. In this case, you must take antibiotics for your problem or you may never get relief.

Barberry and Cancer

While barberry has many excellent medicinal uses, one area where it is being studied in great detail is in the area of oncology. The berbamine that barberry produces is being tested for its usage in the prevention and treatment of liver cancer and leukemia.

Many of the clinical trials using berbamine are in their second and third phases which means that it has shown very promising results in the first phase of trial. In trials conducted with leukemia patients, studies showed that patients taking berbamine in conjunction with their chemo achieved better results with their therapy than those who did not have berbamine.

In clinical trials for liver cancer, patients using berbamine showed better results when using berbamine. Doctors believe that taking a berbamine supplement actually aids the treatment used in liver cancer patients and helps it to work better. In addition, patients taking berbamine showed reduced liver toxicity.

What this means is that patents taking berbamine can stick to treatment longer because the berbamine allows them to tolerate the chemo better. The longer the liver lasts and remains non-toxic, the longer or stronger the chemo can become.

Many doctors believe that the cure rate for cancer is so low because patients cannot tolerate the chemo levels needed to actually become cured. It is possible that berbamine will be the solution to this problem.

An amazing benefit of berbamine is that studies show that there is an indication of apoptosis while it is being use. In the body, apoptosis causes cell death, but in this case, it is good cell death that doesn’t damage the body, but eliminates unnecessary cells (cancer cells in this case!).  Apoptosis is a natural process and one that is needed when cancer cells are in the body.

There are also studies of this alkaloid for heart issues, specifically accelerated heart rate. There are some early indicators that berbamine may reduce or even eliminate heart palpitations.

Barberry Forms

In the world of supplements, barberry is billed as an agent for promoting energy, as an anti-inflammatory, and as a digestive aid. Barberry has been clinically proven to aid in all of these areas.

Some supplement companies’ bill barberry as a heart healthy product. However, there is no medical research to back up this claim. Essentially everything to do with the stomach, yes; heart issues outside of accelerated heart rate, are not proven at this time.

You can purchase barberry in capsules, liquid, pills, ointments and teas. You will also find that there are products that sell barberry bark supplements, barberry root supplements, or a combination of both. Any of these combinations will provide you with excellent results.

However, you should avoid products that combine berberies into the product as studies show that the berries have none of the medicinal properties that the bark and the root contain. In this case, the product is using the berries as filler, while still, technically, providing you with a supplement that is 100% barberry.

If the supplement has berberries, then the potency of the supplement is reduced. You should simply avoid products that use berberries as an ingredient.

You can expect to pay anywhere from $4 to $45 for barberry supplements. Typically, barberry supplements that cost as much as $45 include other supplements as well to provide you with a myriad of different benefits.

Keep in mind that just because a supplement has barberry in it, that doesn’t mean that every claim made on the bottle is true. Supplements aren’t monitored by the FDA, which means you have to discover for yourself just what each ingredient does when used.

Look for claims that say “may” or “can” rather than “will” on the bottle. May or can doesn’t equate a promise, just a suggestion. If one person reported that they had specific results from a product, the company may advertise it as that kind of product.

Getting an education about what you are putting in your body is the best way to ensure that you get the best results from the supplements you take.

Barberry Side Effects and Interactions

Fortunately, most people don’t encounter side effects when using barberry. However, if you don’t follow dosing instructions and take too much, you might experience nosebleeds. In addition, high doses may cause vomiting.

Children, babies and pregnant women should not take barberry. Barberry has been shown to inhibit the function of the liver in infants and in children. Pregnant women who have taken barberry have experienced contractions and there is some concern that this could lead to premature labor or spontaneous abortion.

Barberry can increase the effectiveness of some drugs. This may seem like a good thing, but consider what would happen if you were taking blood pressure medication and it became more effective.

Your medication is prescribed based on a number of factors, including your height and weight. If the function of the medication for blood pressure is increased, then you may experience an extreme blood pressure drop.

If you are taking any medication, you should not take barberry or any berbamine supplements without first speaking to your doctor. This is also true if you have any medical conditions.

Barberry can be a very effective tool in your supplement arsenal; however, if not taken correctly, you could hurt yourself. What’s more, if you take medication or are being treated for any medical condition and you take barberry, you could be risking your life.
