Deanol bitartrate

Aid Overall Health / Improve Sports / Increase Energy

Deanol bitartrate is a form of deanol present mainly in dietary supplements. Deanol, or dimethylaminoethanol, is a substance used in supplements, prescription drugs and topical skincare products. Deanol supplements most often contain deanol bitartrate, though several other deanol compounds exist.

Deanol bitartrate may be beneficial for conditions that affect the brain and nervous system. It is usually sold in capsule form, though deanol may also be bought in liquid or topical applications. Deanol is used for a range of conditions from autism to dementia. Supplements may also be effective for increasing energy, athletic performance and concentration.

Not all types of physical activity are suitable for everyone. Users take training advice at their own personal risk.

Summary

Deanol bitartrate is a synthetic version of deanol, a substance found naturally in seafood. Deanol is used in prescription drugs, but deanol bitartrate is usually found in pills and liquid dietary supplements. Deanol is also known as dimethylaminoethanol (DMAE). Deanol bitartrate is a comb... more

Deanol bitartrate is a combination of DMAE and tartaric acid, which  is a crystalline acid found naturally in some plants and wine, according to the National Toxicity Program. Deanol bitartrate is used for pharmaceutical purposes in the drug Liparon.

Athletic Performance

Deanol bitartrate has been shown to improve athletic performance. According to an article published in the May-June 1991 issue of “Clinical Therapeutics” journal, deanol bitartrate improved maximum oxygen consumption in study participants. The study tested 50 male athletic teachers between the ages of 21 and 47. Participants took two capsules that contained a mix of deanol bitartrate, ginseng extract, minerals, vitamins and trace elements.

After six weeks, results showed that the people who received the supplements had significantly greater oxygen consumption and total work load while exercising on a treadmill than participants given a placebo. The deanol bitartrate mixture group also had lower heart rates during exercise, lower plasma lactate levels and lower carbon dioxide production, which are all beneficial for sports performance.

According to WebMD, taking deanol bitartrate may also improve reflexes as well as increase physical energy. A daily dose of 300 to 2,000 milligrams can help athletic performance.

Liver Damage

Deanol bitartrate may help prevent liver damage. According to eHow.com, there is evidence that deanol bitartrate when given with an acetaminophen called paracetamol can reduce hepatotoxic effects of the medication.

Hepatotoxicity is liver damage that occurs from a metabolite of paracetamol. Deanol protected mice and rats from damage to the liver associated with  paracetamol use.

Autism in Children

According to eHow.com, deanol bitartrate may be beneficial for children with autism. The Institute of Child Behavior tried a variety of treatments for thousands of autistic children, and then surveyed the parents. The treatments included traditional treatments and new supplements.

Deanol was the second most highly rated supplement on the surveys. Twice as many people reported that deanol was helpful for behavioral problems in autistic children than those who reported worsening problems.

Dementia

Deanol bitartrate may also be effective for improving dementia symptoms. According to eHow.com, a study in 1977 found that 10 out of 14 dementia patients showed improvement in depression, irritability and anxiety from taking deanol.

The other four participants experienced no change. No one reported worse symptoms.

Acetylcholine

Deanol is a precursor of acetylcholine, a brain chemical that is crucial for focus, alertness, intelligence, energy and for muscles to contract. Acetylcholine affects the central nervous system.

The body may also use deanol bitartrate to make choline, an important chemical with a similar structure to deanol. The body uses choline to make acetylcholine. Choline is found in high concentration in breast milk. It can help prevent memory loss as a result from aging, according to eHow.com.

Cognitive Impairment

Deanol bitartrate could be beneficial for people suffering memory difficulties due to a cognitive impairment.

According to LiveStrong.com, deanol products can enhance memory and brain activity.

Additional Benefits:

  • Deanol bitartrate can help with other problems, such as:
  • Improved skin health and tightness
  • Improved oxygen efficiency
  • Improved red blood cell function
  • Improved reflexes
  • Liver spot prevention
  • Mood elevation
  • Prolonged life
  • Raised intelligence

However, there is insufficient evidence as of yet to prove these benefits, according to WebMD.

Side Effects

According to eHow.com, there is some evidence that high amounts of deanol bitartrate may cause side effects, including:

  • Anxiety
  • Headaches
  • Irritability
  • Stiffness in jaw, neck and shoulders

According to WebMD, deanol may also lead to:

  • Constipation
  • Depression
  • Drowsiness
  • Elevated blood pressure
  • Excitation
  • Insomnia
  • Itching
  • Mental confusion
  • Muscle tension
  • Uncontrolled movements of the mouth and face
  • Vivid dreams

These side effects may be due to taking high amounts of deanol too quickly. Starting with low doses and slowly increasing amounts overtime may prevent side effects, according to the LiveStrong.com.

Some skincare products may contain deanol. Use of these products could cause mild skin cells damage, though not necessarily more harm than any other new products can cause when first used.

Risk Groups

People with certain conditions should not take deanol bitartrate. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not use deanol because it is not known whether the substance is safe for babies, according to WebMD.

People with Alzheimer’s disease may be better off not taking deanol because its use is linked to mental retardation and confusion. The stimulatory effect that deanol has on the body may also make its use contraindicated for people with bipolar disorder, epilepsy, anxiety and schizophrenia..

Depressed individuals should avoid deanol as well because it can make symptoms of depression worse. Deanol may have the same effect on people who have clonic-tonic seizures.

Drug Interactions

Drying medications, called anticholinergic medications, may interact with deanol bitartrate. Taking deanol at the same time a person takes drying medications may lessen the effectiveness of the drugs, according to WebMD.

Another risk of taking deanol bitartrate is that it may raise levels of acetylcholine, which is similar in structure to chemicals in medications for Alzheimer's and glaucoma. Deanol, therefore, increases the risk of side effects from these medications.

Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, such as tacrine (Cognex) and donepezil (Aricept), can also interact with deanol.

Furthermore, people taking medications for allergies and depression should ask their doctors if there is risk of an interaction occurring with deanol bitartrate and their medications as some, but not all, of these drugs may react.
