Vincamine is a supplement used to enhance memory and other aspects of the human brain. This drug works by allowing more blood to flow through the brain.
Found in the periwinkle, vincamine can improve memory and concentration. This supplement’s effect on the blood flow in your brain can help it use oxygen and glucose better than it could without vincamine.
Vincamine is also known as Vinca Minor and periwinkle extract.
Not all types of physical activity are suitable for everyone. Users take training advice at their own personal risk.

Vincamine is made from a shrub, periwinkle, indigenous to parts of Spain, France and other countries in Western Europe. Periwinkle is an evergreen shrub that produces blue or violet flowers.
This drug can also be made synthetically. The synthetic form of vincamine is called vinpocetine and will be discussed in a later section.
Vincamine is used to improve the way your brain functions. Companies sell their own form of vincamine by extolling its effects on memory, concentration and the ability to think clearly.
In the medical field, vincamine can help with brain deficiencies in elderly people. Some of these problems include memory loss, headaches, mini strokes and dementia.
Although vincamine mainly affects brain function, it can also help treat tinnitus and hypertension. Other effects of vincamine are to aid antioxidants, protect against stroke, help your brain’s neurons absorb glucose, increase energy, and provide more protection for your urinary tract.
Vinpocetine is a more powerful form of vincamine. The recommended dose for vincamine is 30mg at least once a day but can be more.
Patients new to vinpocetine should start with 5mg to 10mg a day and can work up to only 40mg daily. Vinpocetine has the same effects as vincamine, plus some others, and passes through the blood-brain barrier easily.
This derivative of vincamine is a vasodilator, which is a drug or nutritional supplement that increases blood flow. Taking vincamine can be a good way for athletes to improve their workouts because more nutrients can get into their muscles if their blood flows better. However, this use of vinpocetine has not been tested.
Vinpocetine has anti-inflammatory properties. These properties may counter some of the effects of Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease but this treatment is still in its trial phases.
Vincamine has a few unwanted side effects. These include a loss of the ability to taste, insomnia, abnormal dreams and nausea.
Like vincamine, vinpocetine can upset your stomach, but that is its only common side effect. Vinpocetine has also been known to compromise your immune system, but that is a very rare side effect.
Vinpocetine has not been tested for pregnant women so there may be unknown side effects on fetuses.
Like all drugs used to treat humans, vincamine went through vigorous clinical trials to prove it is safe to take. All trials use common methods to ensure the results are sound. Below is a summary of these methods.
When scientists want to test a new drug, they do so by testing it on a group of animals or humans, depending on which stage of research the drug is in. Some of the subjects, the experimental group, are given the drug, and others are given a placebo. The subjects on the placebo are called the control group.
At the end of the experiment, scientists compare the responses from the experimental group and the control group. If the experimental group shows improvement and doesn’t experience severe or harmful side effects, the drug will either go onto the next level of testing or be approved to be sold on the market.
Although vincamine has gone through a battery of tests, this article will focus on only one.
There was an experiment done at Karl Franzens University in Graz, Austria in which 152 patients agreed to test the effects vincamine had on their dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. This test included male and female patients.
These people were given either vincamine or a placebo, and neither the patients nor the people administering the drug knew which people received the placebo. Although 10 people dropped out of this study (for reasons not mentioned in the study’s abstract), results showed that vincamine positively affected those who took it.
All the participants in this study received 30mg of vincamine or a placebo two times a day. People in the experimental group who suffered from early stages of dementia showed marked improvement. Those who had more severe forms of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease and/or those in the control group did not improve.
Vincamine seems to be a safe nutritional supplement with a wide range of uses. Not only can it be used to give people a mental boost, vincamine has great promise of becoming part of the treatment for two of the main diseases people dread today.
